Physics from rice University in Texas have developed a fundamentally new approach to distillation of alcohol. Instead of heating the liquid from below, scientists have proposed to target the laser to the surface, heat it and save a significant amount of energy, reports Yahoo News.

However, this requires a mixture of water and ethyl alcohol is added to the gold nanoparticles. They absorb photons, thereby heating and increasing the temperature of the mixture near the surface. Ethanol evaporates out of the water as in standard distillation. But instead of 95 per cent alcohol the new system gets strong 99%.

Co-author with Naomi Halas claims that this method is much more efficient. In her opinion, people over the ten thousand years heats the water correctly bottom. More energy efficient way to heat it gradually on top without wasting excess energy in the entire volume of fluid.
