Picture of the day: a laser producing plasma hotter than the Sun

Ionic gas generated by the laser power of 200 trillion watts.

Scientists have learned to create in the laboratories of many natural phenomena, including plasma, which is many times hotter than the one in the center of the Sun, according to gizmodo.com.

In the middle of the picture you can see a small white star is a plasma created by the laser power of 200 trillion watts. The photo was taken at the Los Alamos laboratory during one of the experiments with the Trident Laser.

According to scientists, laser, developing capacity of 200 trillion watts plate is irradiated foil with a thickness of one micrometer in the center of the image, resulting in a plasma – ionized gas – the temperature of which is much larger than in the center of the Sun. During the experiment, some electrons are accelerated to the speed of light, and the individual ions are accelerated to energies of tens of millions of volts.
