Martian dust hides 150 billion cubic meters of ice

Scientists have found that the surface of Mars surround the glaciers, hidden from view under a thick layer of dust. They are located in the Central latitudes of the Northern and southern hemisphere of the planet. A report on this discovery was published in Geophysical Research Letters.

Despite the fact that encircling Mars rings were opened long ago, researchers for a long time could not determine their composition. Scholars have advanced various theories, according to which education could be frozen water, carbon dioxide  or simply compacted rocks. the

However, the data obtained from the spacecraft Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter confirmed the view that the Martian belt consist of real ice. According to nanno Carlson, an employee of the University of Copenhagen, these formations are giant water reservoir of the planet.

Scientists estimate that the Martian rings contain about 150 billion cubic meters of frozen water. For example, if this ice covered the entire planet, then its thickness would be about 1.1 meters.

the Researchers believe that it is a thick layer of dust that hid the ice rings from observers, helped save the water supply of the red planet from evaporation.
