In Russia created ion engine for deep space

In Voronezh has developed and conducted the first test firing of electric rocket jet engine: the unit is driven by a jet of ionized gas is accelerated in an electromagnetic field. The system has a small thrust, but long service life, thereby effective in long flights, reports "Rossiyskaya Gazeta".

Development of ion engine is maintained by the efforts of chemical automation design Bureau (kbkha) and the Moscow aviation Institute with 2013. Then design Bureau won the grant of the Ministry of education on the creation of high-tech production.

"the First successful test showed that the chosen design solutions are correct, so in the near future firing tests manufactured instance of the engine will continue. We will analyze their results, which in turn will allow to go further in the creation of electric propulsion thrusters ion type," — said the chief designer in the direction of Andrey Ivanov.

the Idea of creating such a power plant was mentioned in the publication by Konstantin Tsiolkovsky in 1911, however it was first documented in 1906 by Robert Goddard. As the main ion engine was first used on the spacecraft Deep Space 1.
