Last summer, Japanese distillery Santory announced plans to send into space samples of whiskey and other alcoholic beverages for ripening. As it turned out, this idea came up much earlier Manager Scottish distillery Ardbeg Distillery, which has triggered a sample of whiskey into Earth's orbit in 2011. After staying on the ISS for several years he was in the glasses tasters.

the Control sample remained in Scotland, so upon arrival to earth "space" whiskey, deservably in special conditions, could be compared to "earth". The parcel with alcohol returned to Earth last year, however, the results of research and tastings have been published only the day before.

Tests have shown (PDF) that microgravity does have an impact not only on chemical composition but also on the taste of whiskey. Unlike worldly, travelled to space the drink came to the fore the flavors of antiseptic and rubber. Tasters felt them and in the control sample, however, they were in this case much less severe.

In Ardbeg emphasize that the achieved effect indicates prospects for the development of new tastes. However, on a commercial basis of the project to deliver in the near future will not work: the price of the finished product will be truly astronomical.
