Engineers at Washington University have developed technology that as power for small devices using energy generated by the Wi-Fi router. System Power Over Wi-Fi (PoWiFi) Popular Science magazine named the most innovative and world-changing technology from developed in 2015.

Development made a splash earlier this year when scientists published an online document with a detailed description of the work PoWiFi. In it they showed how using the power of Wi-Fi signal was able to power simple temperature sensor, a black and white lower resolution camera and to recharge the fitness tracker Jawbone from zero to 41% for 2 and a half hours. The system is made so that the charging function does not affect the quality of the output signal from the Wi-Fi router.

Development will be useful for building Internet-of-things: tiny sensors built-in coffee machines, air conditioners, refrigerators and mobile phones that will allow devices to "communicate" with each other.

the Main problem during development was the frequency of the Wi-Fi router, which there are periods of silence. For this purpose it was decided to transfer the "energy packs" for Wi-Fi channels are currently not used. Accept them integrated into the devices of special sensors.
